1. Which Stihl battery system?
A battery from one system works with every tool in that system, so most people pick a system first and add tools to it over time.
- AS System (10.8V): small, light tools for quick jobs, such as the HSA 26 garden shear, HSA 30 and HSA 40 hedge trimmers, HLA 40 long-reach hedge trimmer, FSA 30 grass trimmer and HTA 30 pole pruner. The AS 2 battery weighs just 0.22kg.
- AK System (36V): Stihl's range for home gardens. It covers most of the RMA lawn mowers (RMA 235 to RMA 448 RV), the MSA 60, 70 and 80 chainsaws, FSA 50 to FSA 80 R trimmers, HSA 50 and HSA 60 hedge trimmers, the HLA 56 and the HTA 50 pole pruner. Batteries run from the AK 10 to the AK 30 S, and starter sets pair a battery with the AL 101 charger.
- AP System (36V): the professional range for long days and heavy work, including the MSA 300 (Stihl's most powerful cordless chainsaw), FSA 110 R to FSA 400 brushcutters, the HSA 100 to HSA 150 and HLA 66 to HLA 150 hedge trimmers, HTA 66 to HTA 150 pole pruners and the RMA 448 PV, RMA 453 PV and RMA 750 to 765 professional mowers. AR 2000 L and AR 3000 L backpack batteries run AP tools on a cable for the longest run times.
The AL 101 charger charges both AK and AP batteries, which helps if you own tools from both.
2. Petrol or battery?
- Battery: quiet, no fumes and starts at the press of a trigger. Ideal for home gardens, work near houses, and tools that sit unused between jobs. The AP System is built for professional use.
- Petrol: still the choice for the biggest jobs and longest days away from a charger: felling and milling with saws up to the MS 881 (the world's most powerful production chainsaw), forestry clearing with the FS 361 to FS 561 C-EM clearing saws, and larger mowers such as the RM 655 and RM 756 YC.

Do Stihl battery tools come with a battery and charger?
It depends on the listing: some come as a set with battery and charger, others as tool only. Each product page says which. If you already own batteries for the same system, the tool only version is the cheaper choice.
Can I use one battery for all my Stihl tools?
Yes, within the same system: an AK battery runs every AK tool, and an AP battery every AP tool. AS tools take the smaller AS batteries. If you're mixing systems, call us and we'll tell you what fits.
