Tillers & Rotavators

    Filter

Turning over compacted soil by hand is hard, slow work — a tiller or rotavator does it in a fraction of the time, breaking up the ground, mixing in compost and leaving a fine, crumbly tilth ready for planting. Whether you're preparing a vegetable plot, an allotment or a new flower bed, the right machine takes the backache out of cultivation and gives your plants the best possible start.

The main things to weigh up are working width and depth, and the type of tines. Narrow cultivators are light, manoeuvrable and ideal for tight beds, established borders and getting between rows, while wider rotavators cover large plots quickly and dig deeper for breaking new ground. Petrol models give you the power and freedom to work anywhere, while lighter battery and electric machines suit smaller, regular jobs close to home. Consider how hard and how often you'll be digging, and whether you're tackling heavy clay or simply refreshing existing soil.

      Choosing the right machine

For an established raised bed or veg patch, a compact cultivator is usually ample. For breaking new ground, a paddock or a large allotment, step up to a more powerful rotavator with adjustable depth and a wider tilling width. If in doubt, tell us the size and condition of your plot and we'll point you to the right model.
