Fixed blades that penetrate the soil surface and cut through the densest layers of thatch, dead grass, leaves and weed growth. Where the spring tine scarifier lifts loose material, the dethatcher goes after the matted layer underneath that a rake will never shift.
This is the heaviest of the three thatch cartridges, so treat it accordingly. Run it in late February or March, or again in September and October, when the lawn has enough of the growing season left to knit back together. Do not use it on a stressed lawn in high summer.
If you are not sure whether you need this or the scarifier, the test is simple: push your fingers into the sward. If you meet a dense spongy mat before you reach soil, that is what the dethatcher is for. If the moss and debris lift away easily, the scarifier is enough.
