The job most owners buy it for is worm casts. Left alone they get flattened by the roller into muddy smears that kill the grass underneath and blunt the cutting cylinder. Brushing them off when they are dry takes a few minutes and saves both problems.
It also lifts the grass before mowing and improves the presentation of stripes without taking any length off, which is useful in the weeks when the lawn does not need cutting but you want it to look cut.
