Closely spaced slim steel blades set to cut vertically into the sward rather than across it. That does two jobs at once: it lifts and severs the grasses growing sideways across the surface, and it prunes the plant so it responds by throwing up new upright growth.
This is the cartridge for a lawn that has gone spongy and coarse, where runners and lateral growth have started to smother the finer grasses. It is more aggressive than the spring tine scarifier, so use it in April through October when the lawn has the growing conditions to recover, and expect it to look worse before it looks better.
If your interest is fine turf density for bowling or sports use rather than tidying a domestic lawn, look at the sports verticut cartridge instead, which has backwards-angled blades aimed at tillering.
