The EGO LM1702ESP is the self-propelled version of the LM1701E: the same 42cm deck for a small to medium lawn, but with rear-wheel drive doing the walking for you. It earns its money if your garden has any slope, or if you'd rather not push a mower with a full grass box. The drive runs at variable speed, so you set the pace to suit the ground rather than being pulled along at one setting.

It comes with the larger 4.0Ah battery and standard charger, up from the push model's 2.5Ah. That extra capacity matters here, because the self-propelled drive draws on the same pack as it moves you along, so the bigger battery helps keep your mowing time up rather than simply going further. It takes any EGO 56V battery if you want to fit a bigger one, and the same pack will run an EGO trimmer or hedgecutter, so it's a sensible first machine if you're building a cordless set.

Seven cutting heights from 20mm to 80mm are set from one lever, with a 55-litre collector, mulching and rear-discharge as you prefer. The polypropylene deck won't rust or dent, the handlebars fold for upright storage, and EGO's five-year domestic warranty sits behind it.
