Lawn Mowers

A walk-behind lawn mower is the right tool for most UK gardens. This range covers petrol, battery and mains-electric machines, from compact push mowers for a town lawn to self-propelled and rear-roller models built for larger plots and a striped finish. Brands include Hayter, Honda, EGO, Stihl, Cobra, Mountfield, Masport and Toro.

Not sure where to start? Our buying guide below starts with lawn size, then power source, drive and how you want to handle the clippings, the same questions we ask in the Westbere showroom.

      1. How big is your lawn?

      • Small town garden (roughly under 200 m²): a 32 to 42 cm push mower is usually enough. Battery suits most of these lawns if you cut regularly.
      • Medium garden (about 200 to 600 m²): look at 43 to 48 cm, ideally self-propelled so you are not pushing the weight of a bag of wet grass.
      • Large lawn (600 m² and up): 50 to 53 cm self-propelled petrol (or a larger battery kit with spare capacity) keeps the job manageable. If a walk-behind takes more than about an hour, look at our ride-on mowers instead.

Narrow side passages and shed doors matter as much as area. Measure the tightest gap before you choose a wide deck.

      2. Petrol, battery or mains electric?

      • Petrol: strongest choice for larger lawns, longer grass and uneven ground. Needs fuel and servicing, but runtime is not limited by a battery pack. See petrol lawn mowers.
      • Battery: quiet, no pull-cord, no petrol smell, and the same pack often runs other tools in the brand's system (EGO, Stihl AK/AP, Hayter 60V, Cobra 40V). The trade-off is planning the cut around charge and battery size. See battery lawn mowers.
      • Mains electric: fine for a small, flat lawn near a socket. The cable is the limit; we stock far more battery and petrol options for most buyers.

      Choosing the right walk-behind

      • Push or self-propelled: push suits light machines on flat ground. Self-propelled (and variable-speed or hydrostatic drive on higher models) takes the strain on larger decks, slopes and when the collector is full.
      • Clippings: rear collect gives the tidiest lawn and picks up leaves, but you empty the box. Mulching chops clippings fine and returns them as feed; it works best when you cut little and often. Side discharge is quickest on longer or rougher grass. Many machines do two or all three (sometimes with an optional plug or chute).
      • Rear roller and stripes: a full-width rear roller (as on Hayter Harrier and similar) leaves the classic stripe and a flatter finish. Four-wheel mowers are lighter to turn and better on uneven ground; they do not stripe the same way.
      • Rotary or cylinder: almost all garden mowers are rotary (a horizontal blade under the deck). A cylinder mower uses a scissor cut for a finer finish on a well-kept lawn; it is the wrong tool for long or rough grass. See the cylinder collection if that is what you want.

      Frequently asked questions

What size lawn mower do I need?
Match cutting width to the lawn and to your gates and paths. As a rough guide: under about 200 m², 32 to 42 cm; medium gardens, 43 to 48 cm; larger plots, 50 cm and up, or a ride-on if cutting takes over an hour.

Is a battery lawn mower powerful enough?
For most domestic lawns cut regularly, yes, if the battery is sized for the job. Petrol still wins on very large areas, thick growth and all-day use without a spare pack.

      Do I need a self-propelled mower?
On a small flat lawn a push mower is fine. Once the deck gets wider, the ground slopes, or you often cut when the grass is damp, self-propelled is worth having.

Should I collect, mulch or side-discharge?
Collect for the cleanest finish, mulch to save emptying and feed the lawn, side-discharge for speed on longer grass. Choose a model that can switch if your lawn changes through the season.

      Rotary or cylinder?
Rotary for general garden use. Cylinder for a fine, striped finish on a lawn you keep short. Robots are a separate choice if you want automated cutting; see our robotic range.

      Do you deliver lawn mowers?
Yes, UK-wide. Local customers can also collect from Westbere after we have checked the machine over.
